Movies as Literature

with Melissa Hardy/Brian Thomas

Movies are an appealing vehicle to use in teaching stories or what is formally called literary analysis.  Every story has a purpose and movies follow the structure of a short story.  The story is usually told from one point of view, follows a single plot line and has a few well-defined characters.  This simplified structure makes it easier for students to dig deeper into the story’s elements.  This course is intended to help students understand the elements of good story-telling, identify and respond to messages and techniques used by filmmakers. The students will develop the ability to critique stories and their underlying messages and analyze them from a moral point of view.

This summer camp will use Movies as Literature curriculum student book, $16.00.

Movies to be watched and analyzed include Arsenic and Old Lace (comedy), The Emma, (Romantic comedy), Friendly Persuasion (historical drama), To Kill a Mockingbird (classic), A Man for all Seasons (historical drama).  These films are PG.

This class is for high school students only.
