and discussing a famous artwork to discover these elements in action, and
then participate in hands on art projects where students will be able to
develop their artistic skills. Projects include collage, painting,
sketching and sculpture. This camp would be a great preparation for a

Movies as Literature
with Melissa Hardy/Brian Thomas
Movies are an appealing vehicle to use in teaching stories or what is
formally called literary analysis. Every story has a purpose and
movies follow the structure of a short story. The story is
usually told from one point of view, follows a single plot line and
has a few well-defined characters. This simplified structure
makes it easier for students to dig deeper into the story’s elements.
This course is intended to help students understand the elements of
good story-telling, identify and respond to messages and techniques
used by filmmakers. The students will develop the ability to critique
stories and their underlying messages and analyze them from a moral
point of view.
This summer camp will use Movies as Literature curriculum student
book, $16.00.
Movies to be watched and analyzed include Arsenic and Old Lace
(comedy), The Emma, (Romantic comedy), Friendly Persuasion (historical
drama), To Kill a Mockingbird (classic), A Man for all Seasons
(historical drama). These films are PG.
This class is for high school students only.
