Welcome to the First Grade Class at the Center for Home Education, taught by Pamela Baker!  This class is designed to provide a supportive and engaging learning environment for first-grade students who are being homeschooled.  Our goal is to create a cooperative learning community where students can develop academic skills, socialize with peers, and explore various subjects.  We aim to keep the minds of little ones engaged with a thematic, integrated curriculum, full of hands-on activities.  Our classes are small.  Therefore, we can provide a loving environment where children can learn together in group discussions and small center rotations.

Here are some of the subjects and topics we will cover:

1.  Language Arts: reading, phonics, writing, spelling, literature, grammar and punctuation, geography, and art.

2.  Mathematics: advanced addition and subtraction, place value, graphing, money, time, measurement, and so much more.

3.  Handwriting: two to three new letters at a time, going in the order of the most used letters, and introducing short words and sentences. 

Parental involvement is crucial for the success of homeschooling.  Parents are encouraged to actively participate in their child's learning by providing support, reviewing and completing homework assignments, and reinforcing concepts at home.  Children will have math and literacy homework of approximately 90 minutes per week (30 minutes each day we are not in class).  Each student will have a take-home folder facilitating learning between the Center and your family's personal homeschool journey.  Reminder: according to the Center's Covenant, parents/guardians must agree to do the required homework and respond to all emails/texts from teachers and the Center to be a good fit for classes.  

Parents will be required to attend an orientation to First Grade at the Center before the first day of class.  At that time, each parent will be provided with a scope and sequence for the year, details on at-home learning, and an opportunity to answer questions or concerns.

Each first-grade student must bring a backpack, water bottle, and snack/lunch daily to class.  We encourage dressing comfortably for outside playtime.
