The ASL I (American Sign Language I) Class, taught by Pamela Baker, is a comprehensive course designed for students in grades 7th through 10th to introduce them to the fundamentals of American Sign Language. This course aims to develop students' communication skills in ASL, enhance their cultural understanding of the Deaf community, and foster a positive attitude towards inclusivity and diversity.

The curriculum of ASL I covers various aspects of ASL, including vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and non-manual markers. Students will learn how to engage in basic conversations, express emotions, describe objects and people, and discuss everyday topics using ASL. The course also emphasizes receptive skills, enabling students to understand and interpret signed messages from others.

Throughout the course, students will be exposed to Deaf culture and history, gaining a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives of the Deaf community. They will learn about the contributions of Deaf individuals to society, the importance of accessibility, and the challenges faced by the Deaf community.

ASL I utilizes a combination of instructional methods to facilitate learning. These may include interactive activities, group discussions, role-playing, video demonstrations, and online resources. Students will have opportunities to practice their signing skills through in-class exercises, assignments, and interactive projects.

Benefits of ASL I

1. Communication Skills: ASL I equips students with valuable communication skills in American Sign Language. This opens up opportunities for them to interact and connect with Deaf individuals, fostering inclusivity and breaking down communication barriers.

2. Cultural Understanding: By learning ASL, students gain a deeper appreciation for Deaf culture and the experiences of the Deaf community. This promotes cultural understanding, empathy, and respect for diversity.

3. Enhanced Cognitive Abilities: Studies have shown that learning a second language, such as ASL, can improve cognitive abilities, including memory, problem-solving, and multitasking skills. ASL I provides students with a unique linguistic experience that enhances their overall cognitive development.

4. Career Opportunities: Proficiency in ASL can open doors to various career paths. Students who continue their ASL education beyond ASL I may pursue careers as interpreters, educators, advocates for the Deaf community, or work in fields where knowledge of ASL is highly valued, such as healthcare, social work, and customer service.

5. Personal Growth: ASL I encourages personal growth by promoting self-expression, creativity, and confidence. Learning a visual language like ASL can broaden students' perspectives and help them develop a greater appreciation for different forms of communication.

Overall, ASL I provides students with a strong foundation in American Sign Language, fosters cultural understanding, and offers numerous benefits that extend beyond the classroom.

Homework Requirements:

According to the Center's recommendation, high school students are advised to spend 2-4 hours per week on homework. This time allocation is considered appropriate to ensure a balance between academic responsibilities and other extracurricular activities. It allows students to consolidate their learning, complete assignments, and develop a deeper understanding of the subjects they are studying. However, it is important to note that individual student needs may vary, and some students may require more or less time to complete their homework effectively.

Students will be required to keep a practice log for required minutes of studying/practicing each week.
