3RD GRADE BLOCK
This 3rd Grade Block program is for students who are "ready" for 3rd-grade material, and it has 2 components - A Language Arts component and a Mathematics component. Parents are the true "home school" who will work with the teacher as a team to accomplish goals set by the parents. We will be the guide and the classroom instructor, expertly crafting the 3rd-grade year for your child. Parents will continue teaching on the 3 non-class days what was started in the class. Students will be ready to confidently attend the 4th-grade classes the following Fall by the end of the year.
The language arts component promotes effective oral and written communication. Students will expand on previously learned grammar, reading, comprehension, spelling, and writing skills. Students will be read to during class and have sessions where they will read aloud. Fluency and tone will be emphasized. Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. Reading fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Children at this age are beginning to understand the differences between a literal and non-literal text, such as metaphors and analogies. We will assess your student every 4 weeks to monitor progress and identify any possible areas that need more attention and improvement. Students must complete their homework assignments during the 3 non-class days.

Saxon Math 3 and Teacher's Edition for Saxon Math 3
Saxon is basic but thorough and well-organized in its systematic, spiraling approach. Parents will gauge how well students understand concepts as daily assignments are checked. A good understanding is the best way to gauge how well any curriculum is working.
Saxon math programs produce confident students who cannot only compute correctly but also apply concepts to new situations. These materials gently develop concepts, and the practice of those concepts is extended over a considerable period of time. This is called "incremental development and continual review." Material is introduced in easily understandable pieces (increments), allowing students to grasp one facet of a concept before the next one is introduced. Both facets are then practiced together until another one is introduced. This feature is combined with continual review in every lesson throughout the year.
Topics are never dropped but are increased in complexity and practiced every day, providing the time required for concepts to become totally familiar. Saxon Math 3 comprises five instructional components: number fact practice, the lesson, class practice, and homework. Students need to be ready for Grade 3 Math at the beginning of the year and be given assessments every 4 weeks to monitor progress.
