This is an active beginning Cake Decorating class for students between 10 years old and 14 years old. Approximately 5th-grade level to 9th-grade level.
Students will bring a pre-baked one-layer cake and cupcakes to class each week. During class, students will use their cake and follow along as the teacher demonstrates different designs. Students will learn how to use buttercream frosting to do a crumb coat and ice a cake smooth. Students will get practice adding color to icing, filling frosting bags, using different sizes of tips, including how to choose the correct tips for the desired look. All of these steps take time and practice to be performed well.
You will not need to bake a cake for the first class. After the first day, you will need to buy your own boxed cake mix each week and prepare it at home before the next class. One box mix will be more than you will need for a one-layer cake, so you will use the leftover to make cupcakes and bring them with you.
For the majority of the semester, we will be leaving the cakes in their pans to decorate, so they can be brought up to school this way. You will need to purchase a cake carrier to avoid messing up your frosting work. You can get one at Walmart for about $10.
We will have all the supplies needed for decorating in class. Wear an apron or an old shirt because the food coloring and frosting will stain!
