LANGUAGE ARTS 4-6, CHARLOTTE MASON INSPIRED
“I am, I can, I ought, I will”
Welcome to a “living literature” class for 4th-6th graders! Based on Charlotte Mason’s philosophy and practices, we will sail the adventures of the sea with Nat Bowditch in, Carry on Mr. Bowditch, and delight in the classic tale of Heidi.
Each week students will engage in transcription and dictation, oral and written narration, and feast on ideas through lively class discussions regarding places, times, and characters.
The day will consist of:
· Reading 40 minutes
· Narrating (oral and written composition) 20 minutes
· Transcription (copy work) and Dictation 20 minutes
· Transcription and Dictation will hit on grammar, spelling and phonics each week
· Recitation of Sonnets at the end of each class 10 minutes
At the end of each semester, students will read from the Tales of Shakespeare and recite sonnets from Shakespeare’s Sonnets and Poems.
The Charlotte Mason method is based on Charlotte’s firm belief that the child is a person, and we must educate that whole person, not just his mind. So, a Charlotte Mason education is three-pronged: in her words, “Education is an atmosphere, a Discipline, a Life.”
