PIANO/KEYBOARDING

This class will teach the basics of music including playing with a steady beat, singing on pitch, note and rhythm reading, keyboard technique, theory, and music appreciation. Students will be introduced to famous composers and compositions. They will have an opportunity to practice both vocal and instrumental participation in class, applying skills to the learning and performing of songs. Students will have weekly assignments and are expected to practice and work on musical elements outside of class 4 – 5 days per week for at least 10 minutes.

Curriculum/Required Text(s): 1) For grades K-3: Alfred’s Basic Group Piano Course, Book 1 (Book 2 may be needed in the 2nd semester, depending on class progress) ISBN: 978-0739002155 -- Must purchase on your own.

For grades 4-6: Alfred’s Basic Group Piano Course, Book 2 (Book 3 may be needed in the 2nd semester, depending on class progress) ISBN: 978-0739002162 -- Must purchase on your own. 2) Just The Facts Theory Workbook, Book 1 ( www.musicbagpress.com )

Required Materials: Keyboard* Headphones Pencil and a 3-ring binder for class practice materials and assignments *For class, the students need a keyboard that is portable. I would just get something inexpensive for class and have a nicer instrument at home to practice on. In class, it is helpful if the keyboard can function without being plugged in (batteries). A shorter keyboard with full-size keys is probably best, as the miniature keys tend to be a hindrance. Headphones to plug into the keyboard are helpful in class though we don't use them all the time. Ideally, students would have access to something with full size and fully weighted keys for practice outside of class.
