The ASL II Class, taught by Pamela Baker, is an American Sign Language course designed for students in grades 7th through 10th. Building upon the foundational skills learned in ASL I, this course aims to further develop students' proficiency in American Sign Language and their understanding of Deaf culture.

The curriculum of ASL II focuses on expanding vocabulary, improving expressive and receptive signing skills, and enhancing cultural awareness. Students will engage in various interactive activities, discussions, and projects to deepen their understanding of ASL as a visual-gestural language.

Throughout the course, students will learn more complex grammatical structures, idiomatic expressions, and advanced vocabulary related to everyday life, academic subjects, and social interactions. They will also explore different aspects of Deaf culture, including history, traditions, and contributions of the Deaf community.

ASL II places a strong emphasis on active participation and communication. Students will have ample opportunities to practice their signing skills through role-plays, group activities, and conversations with their peers. They will also engage with authentic ASL materials, such as videos, stories, and interviews, to further enhance their comprehension and fluency.

By the end of ASL II, students will have developed a solid foundation in American Sign Language and will be able to engage in more complex conversations, express their thoughts and opinions, and understand a wide range of signed communication. They will also have gained a deeper appreciation for Deaf culture and a greater understanding of the Deaf community's experiences and perspectives.

Benefits of ASL II

1. Enhanced Communication Skills: ASL II provides students with the opportunity to develop strong communication skills in a visual-gestural language. This proficiency in ASL can open doors to effective communication with Deaf individuals, fostering inclusivity and understanding.

2. Cultural Awareness: By studying ASL II, students gain a deeper understanding of Deaf culture, including its history, traditions, and contributions. This cultural awareness promotes empathy, respect, and appreciation for diversity.

3. Expanded Career Opportunities: Proficiency in ASL can lead to various career paths, such as interpreting, teaching, counseling, and working in Deaf-related organizations. ASL II equips students with the necessary skills to pursue these opportunities in the future.

4. Academic Advantages: Learning ASL can enhance cognitive abilities, including spatial reasoning, memory, and multitasking skills. These cognitive benefits can positively impact students' overall academic performance.

5. Personal Growth: ASL II encourages students to step out of their comfort zones, develop confidence in their communication abilities, and embrace a new language and culture. This personal growth fosters self-esteem, adaptability, and a broader perspective on the world.

Overall, ASL II offers students a unique and enriching educational experience, equipping them with valuable skills, cultural understanding, and personal growth opportunities.

Homework Requirements:

According to the Center's recommendation, high school students are advised to spend 2-4 hours per week on homework. This time allocation is considered appropriate to ensure a balance between academic responsibilities and other extracurricular activities. It allows students to consolidate their learning, complete assignments, and develop a deeper understanding of the subjects they are studying. However, it is important to note that individual student needs may vary, and some students may require more or less time to complete their homework effectively.

Students will be required to keep a practice log for required minutes of studying/practicing each week.
