College-Prep Modern World History will explore significant events, people, and developments from the 1400’s to the present. Students will study major historical turning points that have shaped the modern world, including the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, political revolutions, world wars, the Cold War, decolonization, and globalization.

Students will learn to analyze historical sources, develop their capacity to conduct research, and connect past events to contemporary issues. Through a combination of Socratic discussion, hands-on projects, primary source analysis, and thoughtful assignments, students will develop a solid foundation in the history of the modern era and will be prepared to be active and informed citizens. Upon completion of this course, students should possess the analytical and research skills necessary to be successful in college history courses.

Expectations

Students can expect to devote 2-5 hours per week at home, depending on their reading skills and if essays are assigned. Students will be expected to be prepared to present their research findings to the class each week in the form of class discussion, presentation or group activities. This is an interactive course that requires participation.

Internet and computer access at home will be necessary for students to complete their required reading, research, and to watch assigned supplemental videos. Grading will be based on class participation, projects, essays and take-home tests. Students will use Google Classroom each week to receive homework and communications.

Papers may be written in Microsoft Word or manually with legible handwriting.

Cell phones use will be allowed in class for research and reference to e-book readings or supplemental videos only.
