This class will teach the basics of music, including playing with a steady beat, note and rhythm reading, keyboard technique, theory, and music appreciation. Students will apply these skills to learning and performing songs.

Concepts are reinforced through written theory, ear training, sight-reading, technique, rhythm drills, and music games.  Students will have weekly assignments and are expected to practice and work on musical elements outside of class 5 days per week.

Depending on progress, there may be a demo for families during the last class.

If the student cannot read, a family member should attend with them to assist.

Required Materials:

  • Pencil and a 3-ring binder for class practice materials and assignments

  • Basic book holder or music stand (something to prop music on at a table)

  • Cushions may be necessary for smaller children to reach the appropriate table height.

  • Keyboard

For class, students need a portable keyboard; something inexpensive for class and a nicer instrument at home to practice on. In class, it is best if the keyboard can work without being plugged in (batteries).

A shorter keyboard with full-size keys is best, as miniature keys tend to be a hindrance. Ideally, students will have access to something with full-size and fully weighted keys for practice outside of class.
