For this class, students will explore our beautiful state of Texas, while they learn cursive writing. We will learn what makes our great state so GREAT! The first semester will be more cursive learning, with some easy Texas lessons mixed in. The second semester will start shifting to more learning about Texas, and since they know most of the cursive letters by that time, all work should be completed in cursive. We will study the symbols of the Lone Star State, and the Texas Revolution, the flag, the state pledge and motto, and look at some of the major industries in Texas.

We will add some drawings for certain subjects. Students will be able to show their own artistic creativity with activities such as designing their own flag that represents their interests (this following a lesson about what the colors and symbols mean on the Texas Flag). Some drawing lessons will be guided by the teacher with students following along. Other art possibilities may include painting or clay use.

Students should be comfortable with reading and writing at grade level. This is not a heavy homework class, but students will be sent home with cursive practice sheets, and later Texas themed worksheets, to do during the week. It is requested that students have supervised practice of 10 to 15 minutes of cursive writing 3-4 times per week. Just enough to keep them engaged and in practice.

Students will be doing a small, fun project for the 2nd semester. Each student will choose a famous Texan or Texas Landmark. They will research this at home and will give a small presentation to their classmates toward the end of the year. The presentation should consist of a short paper, and a visual presentation as well. The benefit of doing a project like this helps to teach children how to research a topic, aids in developing organizational skills, and begins giving them practice with speaking in front of a small, familiar group.
