This course is designed as a continuation of students’ journey singing and performing onstage. During the course of the class, students will learn the fundamentals of healthy vocal performance, which includes the following: 1) basic anatomy and physiology of the voice; 2) proper posture and breathing to sing; 3) good tone production; and 4) care of the voice.

Specific vocal exercises will be given that address the basic characteristics of the singing voice, such as: pitch and intonation stability, range, flexibility, rhythm, articulation, phrasing, diction, expression, and gaining confidence. In this course, students will explore vocal technique, ensemble singing, and basic music theory (including rhythm, reading music, and dynamics). We will mainly perform songs from musical theatre throughout the ages (age-appropriate, of course!) in each of our semester showcases.

In class, we will warm up as a group, work on our repertoire, and discuss performing with regard to: staging, choreography, blending, stage presence, and more!

Outside of class, students can expect to practice on their own, keep a practice log, and take infrequent quizzes on music theory topics we discuss in class.

It is important to be committed to the pursuit of musical excellence through the development of the human voice and its vast array of artistic expression.
