This course is designed to help students build the essential skills they need to succeed in high school and beyond. Students will develop stronger thinking habits, improve organization and time management, and learn effective study strategies that apply across all subjects. 


Throughout the course, students will learn how to: 

● Ask thoughtful, meaningful questions 

● Understand the difference between opinions, claims, and evidence

● Analyze information and think more deeply about what they read and hear

● Break down large tasks into manageable steps 

● Improve time management and planning skills 

● Take effective notes and study more efficiently 

● Explain and support their answers using clear reasoning 


Each class includes interactive discussions, guided practice, and real-world applications to help students build confidence and independence in their learning. 


This is a highly structured and supportive course that focuses on teaching students how to learn, not just what to learn. 


Course Goals 


By the end of the course, students will be able to: 

● Think critically and ask stronger questions 

● Use evidence to support ideas 

● Manage assignments and deadlines more effectively 

● Develop consistent and effective study habits 

● Approach academic work with greater confidence and independence

Class Structure 


Each class (1.5 hours, 2 days per week) is divided into three sections: 

1. Critical Thinking 

2. Executive Functioning 

3. Study Skills 


Lessons include modeling, guided practice, discussion, and independent application. 


Materials Needed 


Students should bring the following materials to each class: 

● Notebook or binder (for notes and activities) 

● Pens and pencils 

● Highlighters (at least 2 different colors) 

● Folder for handouts 

● Timer or watch (optional, for time management activities) 

● Chromebook or laptop (if available, but not required)
